Plan a travel checklist in stages, not a bag twice
A full suitcase does not mean your charger has left the wall socket. A useful list distinguishes a completed task from one deliberately left until later.
Start with the journey’s requirements
Choose the destination, duration and transport. Check the official authorities relevant to your nationality and destination and your carrier: entry documents and baggage limits are not universal. GOV.UK is one destination-advice index, not a substitute for the visa authority handling your situation.

Order tasks by when you can finish them
Days before: review documents and bookings. While packing: add clothes and supplies you actually need. At departure: phone, charger and keys. Write “put charger in the bag” rather than “charger” if a tick means it is packed.
Make the paper useful, not sensitive
Write “check travel document,” not its number. Avoid card numbers, passwords and private accommodation addresses on paper that could be lost. Remove irrelevant tasks and add family needs rather than copying a long list unchanged.
Example: a 3-night trip. Choose clothes for your activities and leave the charger under “at departure” if you will use it tonight. Owning it does not earn a tick. Keep the box empty until the action is complete; share a blank list with a companion without sharing private bookings.
After returning, note what went unused and what was missing. Keep a shorter list for next time, but check destination requirements again: a packing list is reusable; entry rules may change.
