How weighted admission scores work: weights, goals and limits

Two scores out of 100 can contribute very differently to admission. A weighted score combines results according to a program’s rules. It is not always a simple average, and it is not an admission decision.

A score is not its weight

A score is your school or test result; its weight is the share assigned to it in the combined total. With a 40% achievement weight, one extra achievement point adds 0.4 to the weighted score. Moving from 80 to 90 adds 4 points, not 10. Multiply each score by its percentage weight, divide by 100, and add the contributions without rounding them early.

Start with the program’s formula

Do not assume 30% school, 30% aptitude and 40% achievement applies everywhere. King Khalid University publishes different weights for its programs, including some that include STEP. Check the relevant program and admission year. Weights must total 100%; do not redistribute an unused test’s share yourself.

A planning number, not a promised place

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Education describes competitive admission criteria and possible additional tests, interviews or requirements. Distinguish your calculated score, an application minimum and the outcome of selection. The target of 92 below is hypothetical, not an official cutoff. This formula also cannot determine an official Qiyas score from the number of incorrect answers.

Example: from 90 to a target of 92

With illustrative weights of 30/30/40 and school 95, aptitude 85 and achievement 90: 95 × 0.30 + 85 × 0.30 + 90 × 0.40 = 90. Keeping school and aptitude unchanged, the achievement score needed for 92 is (92 − 28.5 − 25.5) ÷ 0.40 = 95.

A target of 96 would require achievement 105, impossible on a scale ending at 100. The highest weighted score with those other results is 94. Consider a different target or an improvement in another score, without assuming a retake or improvement is available. If the required score is fractional, rounding down can miss the target; respect the actual scoring scale and institution’s rules.
