Extract PDF pages without stripping away their context

A request for an attachment does not always require the full report. Extracting a smaller set is useful when it remains understandable, not when a table loses its heading, units or assumptions.

The third page may not display a printed 3

A cover or contents section can make printed numbering differ from a page’s position in the file. Use the actual positions when selecting pages, then visually check the first and last page of the result.

ToolRoof’s page selection starts at 1 for the first page in the file, not the beginning of the report’s numbering. A range such as 2-4 includes positions 2, 3 and 4.

Keep enough context for the excerpt to make sense

A table spanning two pages may need the page containing its headings and units as well as the requested numbers. Assumptions, abbreviation definitions and issue dates can matter just as much.

The tool extracts selected pages from one PDF into one new PDF; it does not create a separate file for every page. It does not rewrite the text or explain any context that was left out.

Extraction is not redaction

Leaving out a page is not the same as removing sensitive information from retained pages. Inspect the actual output before sharing it; extraction is not a guarantee of removing hidden data or repairing document security.

Keep the original. This workflow accepts an input up to 10 MiB and 100 pages, but not encrypted, signed or interactive-form documents. Obtain the required version from the issuer when a complete official document is needed.

Example: a cover shifts the page positions

A 6-page file has a cover at position 1, and the report’s printed page 1 is at position 2. Selecting 2-4,6 creates a 4-page PDF from source positions 2, 3, 4 and 6, excluding position 5.

Check whether the excluded page contains the table’s legend or qualification. Selecting 2-6 may then be more appropriate: reducing the page count is not a success if the attachment becomes misleading or hard to understand.
